ABOUT PERU

Although many travelers quite rightly associate Peru with the Andes mountains, the culture of the Incas and the mysteries of Machu Picchu, it offers so much more!

To the east of the soaring Andes, more than 60% of Peru’s land area lies within the Amazon basin. Home to 12 UNESCO World Heritage Sites, Peru also boasts 84 of the planet’s 117 life zones. Within its territory, more than 1800 bird species and 10% of all the reptile, mammal and fish species that exist on Earth can be found.

Peru is also a multicultural nation. Spanish is the official language, but 47 indigenous languages are spoken, too, including Quechua, the language of the Incas, and Aymara, which is spoken by the people who inhabit the shores of Lake Titicaca. Among its many living traditions, Peru is globally famous today for its haute cuisine. Peruvian gastronomy is the product of a unique fusion of ancient techniques, enriched by successive waves of migration from four continents. In 2021, Peru was acknowledged as the World’s Leading Culinary Destination.
